Hydrogen in Atlantic Canada
Reimagined Energy is excited to bring you this podcast series in partnership with the Atlantic Hydrogen Alliance. This non-profit organization is working to advance clean hydrogen as part of Atlantic Canada’s transition to a low-carbon future.
The world is tranitioning toward net-zero emissions, and Atlantic Canada is no exception. That means big changes in how we produce, store, and use energy. Sectors like heavy transportation, marine vessels, industrial processes, and long-duration energy storage will need another decarbonization solution. And that’s where hydrogen comes in.
This series was created to promote the 2025 and 2026 Hydrogen East conferences in collaboration with Smart Energy Halifax.
Season One
The Hydrogen Opportunity in Atlantic Canada
Season 1 | Episode 1 | March 21, 2025 | 32 min 56 sec
In this first episode of Atlantic Canada’s Hydrogen Journey, Derek is with David MacGregor, Associate Deputy Minister of the Nova Scotia Department of Energy, to explore the strategic importance of green hydrogen in Nova Scotia’s energy transition and why it could be Nova Scotia’s biggest economic opportunity since “the Age of Sail.”
Building Hydrogen Demand in Atlantic Canada
Season 1 | Episode 2 | March 26, 2025 | 35 min 39 sec
A discussion on the potential of hydrogen as a clean energy source in Atlantic Canada and why hydrogen hubs could be the key to building a thriving domestic hydrogen market. The discussion highlights the challenges of transitioning to hydrogen, the importance of stakeholder collaboration, and the need for government leadership to create a supportive policy framework. Guests Sandy Schembri, NorthStar Public Affairs and David Layzell, The Transition Accelerator, emphasize the importance of developing hydrogen hubs and overcoming the chicken-and-egg dilemma of supply and demand.
Atlantic Canada’s Hydrogen Export Potential
What is the potential of Atlantic Canada to become a leader in green hydrogen production and export? Guests Trent Vichie of EverWind Fuels and Lukas Schuffelen of BET Consulting highlight the region’s abundant wind resources, the growing demand for green hydrogen in Europe, and the necessary infrastructure and investment to make these projects viable. Key challenges, including policy, economics, and competition, are examined, along with the role of the H2 Global auction in bridging the gap between production costs and market prices. The conversation concludes with reflections on future scenarios and the importance of collaboration between Canada and Europe.
Overcoming Hurdles in Atlantic Canada’s Hydrogen Economy
Exploring the headwinds and hurdles standing between Atlantic Canada’s vision to become a green energy powerhouse and the reality of where the hydrogen sector in the region is today. The episode discusses the region’s unique advantages for hydrogen production, its challenges, and the necessary policy and infrastructure developments to realize its ambitions. Experts Arvind Ramakrishnan, Director, National Hydrogen Lead, Deloitte and Adam Langer, Principal Consultant, Langer Public Affairs, provide insights into the current landscape, the importance of government support, and the need for community engagement to overcome skepticism and opposition.
Atlantic Canada's Hydrogen Future
What is the future of energy in Atlantic Canada? Derek Estabrook is with Michelle Robichaud of the Atlantica Centre for Energy, where they focus on the potential of green hydrogen as a transformative economic opportunity. They identify the region’s energy resources, the importance of collaboration and policy alignment, and the need for investment to build a robust hydrogen industry. The discussion highlights the challenges and opportunities in developing a sustainable energy future for Atlantic Canada, emphasizing the role of public support and workforce development.
Season Two
The Case for a Hydrogen Economy
To kick off season two of Atlantic Canada’s Hydrogen Future, host Derek Estabrook speaks with energy strategist Erik Rakhou. Erik founded Rakhou Associates and co-authored the book Touching Hydrogen Future. The conversation explores where the hydrogen economy stands today and where progress stalls. Erik explains why demand continues to grow despite market skepticism. He shares insight from real hydrogen offtake deals and from buyers seeking green ammonia, methanol, and other derivatives.
Dalhousie's Green Hydrogen Research Cluster
The energy transition is about more than just new technology. Turning Atlantic Canada into an energy powerhouse is about building the entire ecosystem. Today, Derek chats with Michael Freund and Mita Dasog from Dalhousie University’s Green Hydrogen Research Cluster on how this cutting-edge team is tackling the most pressing challenges: cutting costs of green hydrogen production, developing earth-abundant catalysts, and building a supply chain from scratch. This episode discusses how international lessons from China and Germany are shaping Atlantic Canada’s unique approach, ensuring the region’s systems are safe, durable, and tailored to local needs.
Closing the Gap: Building Atlantic Canada’s Hydrogen Supply Chain
In this episode, Matt Campbell, Deloitte’s energy transition expert, shares the key findings and describes a clear path forward, emphasizing the importance of regional collaboration, demand growth, and infrastructure planning. The next few years will determine whether Atlantic Canada becomes a hydrogen leader or lags behind. Why does this matter? Because missing these opportunities or stalling on infrastructure could mean Atlantic Canada remains on the sidelines of a multi-trillion-dollar global market. Strategic investments now can cement Atlantic Canada as a reliable, low-cost energy hub, attracting investment and creating thousands of local jobs.
Is Natural Hydrogen the Buried Treasure of the Energy Transition?
What makes natural hydrogen – produced through geological processes deep within the earth’s crust – one of the most fascinating frontiers in clean energy? While the oil and gas industry has known about it for decades, the clean energy world is only beginning to wake up to its potential. Could natural hydrogen be the buried treasure of the energy transition? Or might it be a fool’s gold rush? Barbara Sherwood Lollar and Omid Haeri Ardakani, two of Canada’s top scientists at the cutting edge of natural hydrogen research, explain how Canada’s unique geology creates ideal conditions for natural hydrogen deposits and discuss how Canada could become a global leader in finding, extracting, and scaling natural hydrogen.
