A Chemical Revolution at UPEI with Dr. Yulin Hu
The inaugural episode of the Reimagined Energy Podcast takes us to the University of Prince Edward Island (UPEI), where we meet Dr. Yulin Hu, a chemical engineer with extensive industry experience in biofuels and biomaterials. After joining UPEI in 2021, Dr. Hu introduced us to the university’s innovative, design-based teaching approach that departs from traditional lecture-oriented methods.
An Unconventional Energy Resource
Dr. Hu’s ingenious research project unveils the potential of potato peels, a byproduct of potato processing, as an alternative source of energy. By combining potato scraps with sawdust, hydrogen emerges via a gasification process. This research not only tackles waste management issues but also contributes to bolstering the local economy, given PEI’s prominent potato industry.
Sustainable Energy from Water and Organic Waste
Expanding the horizons of her research, Dr. Hu investigates the production of hydrogen derived from water using UV light and the conversion of organic waste into bio-oil, an alternate fuel source. Implementing processes like photocatalytic water splitting and pyrolysis, the goal is to boost hydrogen production and develop renewable energy solutions compatible with existing transportation systems, requiring zero modifications.
Revising the Carbon Footprint
With an ever-increasing focus on environmental sustainability, Dr. Hu stresses the necessity of curbing CO2 emissions and reducing greenhouse gases. She explores the potential of bioabsorbents and value-added bioproducts as viable solutions for CO2 capture and pollutant removal. This effort is a step towards the industry’s wider objective of decarbonizing and transitioning to cleaner energy sources.
Fuelling Aspiring Minds
The podcast wraps up by discussing the rising interest among students in alternative energy fields and the promise of future advancements in decarbonization. Dr. Hu underscores the tremendous prospects for students entering the industry and the opportunity to work on a diverse array of projects aimed at sustainability and environmental preservation.
Dr. Yulin Hu’s research at UPEI serves as a beacon of innovation, sustainability, and education in the sphere of alternative energy. By focusing on transforming waste into valuable resources, deriving hydrogen from unconventional sources, and developing renewable energies, Dr. Hu and her team are setting the stage for a greener, more sustainable future. The podcast brilliantly highlights the significance of collaborative research, practical learning, and industry alliances in propelling advancements in alternative energy and environmental conservation.
